Ford: we can conquer County

ANDY FORD: County's plight will not feature in his team talk

GRAVESEND & Northfleet boss Andy Ford is in quietly confident mood ahead of Saturday's FA Cup against Notts County at Stonebridge Road.

It will be Fleet's fourth appearance in the second round of the competition. They know that victory could sound the death knell for the League's oldest club who have been in administration for a record 18 months and are desperate for the increased revenue an FA Cup run would raise.

But sentiment will not feature in Ford's team talk. He said: "It's a good opportunity for us to gain a bit of publicity by beating a team who are struggling both financially and in the league, and I think we can do it.

"Although we played Notts County in the Cup three years ago, this is a completely different team."

Should Gravesend qualify for Sunday's third round draw they have been given number 53. The draw will be broadcast live on BBC1 and Sky Sports News at approximateky 3pm.

If it goes to a replay, it will be at Meadow Lane on Tuesday, December 16, kick-off 7.45pm.

Fleet know they are heading for a £75,000 FA Cup cash bonanza as they prepare for Saturday’s match which kicks off at 5.35pm.

Having already pocketed £22,000 from the Football Association’s prize fund payment pool following victories against Exeter and Chester and with Sky Television paying a further £50,000 to broadcast live Saturday’s tie - not to mention their share of gate receipts - the Fleet are in the money.

Should they beat County, they will be entitled to a further £15,000 from the FA prize fund which would bring the total from a money-spinning cup run closer to £100,000.

Aitken confirmed: “At the moment, we are looking to make a figure in the region of £75,000 plus.

“We go into each season without budgeting for revenues from the FA Cup and this money, along with our recent sponsorship with Gladwish Land Sales, is a terrific boost for this club.

“What we don’t want is heavy rain, which could force a postponement which would mean we wouldn’t get the money from Sky if they chose not to show the game on a new date.”

Aitken confirmed that some of the money will go into Andy Ford’s budget and development plans for next season which could see the realisation of the manager’s dream of the club going full-time sooner rather than later.

“The development plan includes the eventual provision of full-time football at Gravesend,” he stressed.

Fleet chances of springing a Cup upset have been hit by Queens Park Rangers' refusal to allow on-loan striker Dennis Oli to become cup-tied while midfielder Rob Owen is suspended.

With Owen out of contention, only central defender Francis Duku and full-back Matt Lee survive from the side that lost 2-1 in the Cup to Notts County when the two clubs last met in the first round three years ago.
