GRAVESEND & Northfleet could have a familiar face on their bench when they entertain Eastbourne Borough in a FA Cup, second qualifying round, on Saturday. The Fleet are ready to call up former Gillingham goalkeeper Ron Hillyard as back-up to first choice keeper Jamie Turner, who has been suffering with a shoulder injury recently.
Hillyard, who made over 600 appearances for the Gills in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, has been training at Stonebridge Road this season but, at the age of 49, the club won't want to risk playing the veteran in an important cup tie.
With Turner out of the Gravesend side in recent weeks his place in goal has gone to on-loan keeper Adrian Blake but the Kingstonian stopper isn't allowed to play because his current club don't want him cup-tied.
Fleet boss Andy Ford, who is still trying to persuade Kingstonian manager Bill Williams to let the keeper play on Saturday, says Turner will definitely start if Blake isn't available.
Gravesend enter the match with their confidence sky high after recording their sixth consecutive away win this season in mid-week.
Ford's side defeated Billericay by three goals to one on Tuesday night to remain top of the Ryman League, Premier Division, and the club manager admits everything is going well at the moment.
"The result in mid-week was fantastic," said Ford. "The machine is rolling along nicely and that is mainly down to the team spirit which is excellent."
