Ebbsfleet boss Josh Wright is keeping a clear focus despite a testing start to his managerial career.
The Fleet have conceded four goals in each of Wright’s first three matches in charge, including a 4-0 loss at Southend on Boxing Day.
That prompted the new Fleet manager to declare changes will be made if his current crop can’t halt the slide as they stare relegation firmly in the face midway through the National League season.
“If I want to give myself a fair crack at this and give the football club a fair crack, of course I have to make changes,” said Wright.
“I’m not saying I will completely wipe through the whole team but I have to make a few changes.
“I have to freshen it up a little bit, like most teams will in January.
“It’s pretty inevitable or obvious that I need to do that but I’ve still got so much respect and time for those boys, and belief that the group I’ve got are good enough to turn this around.
“I need to add some different qualities and a fresh impetus of belief and character. I will do that in my own time but, in the meantime, I will keep working with my team.
“I’m just hoping I can get every inch out of them that I can to improve us.”
All three games under Wright’s leadership have had different circumstances, but the end result has been the same.
Wright conceded: “The goals are very similar, the actions are very similar and the reactions are very similar as well. Rather than being proactive, we’re being reactive with many things.
“All three games have felt very common standing on the side and what I’m looking at, what I’m seeing.
“It hasn’t been good enough so we need to start making it good enough and there’s a few different ways you can do that. That’s exactly what I will be trying to do.
“It hurts, and it has to hurt. I need to get Josh Wright players, players that I want to add to the squad which I keep saying.
“I’m very frustrated, I wouldn’t say low but I’m a little bit gutted. I knew it was going to be difficult to start so ultimately, it’s on me to sort this out and that’s exactly what I will be doing. I will be successful in improving this group with others in it, and I’ll be successful in time, and hopefully that’s sooner rather than later.”
Wright praised the club’s owners and chief executive Damian Irvine. He also stated that mistakes have been made in Ebbsfleet’s recruitment earlier this season.
The transfer window opening in the Football League in January could help the Fleet bring in a better quality of player for the second half of the campaign.
“What we’ve got is fantastic ownership and a fantastic CEO,” added the Fleet boss. “It’s not for me to talk about past [managers], mistakes have been made and you need the right recruitment. You need the right players and if it’s not right with the ones you’ve got then you need to go and find the right ones.
“I’ve got people that are backing me, I have to make changes as I can’t keep rolling with what I’ve got.
“It’s simply not working, it wasn’t working at the start of the season, it wasn’t working three months ago, two months ago, one month ago, and it isn’t working now.
“I have to make changes and they will back me to do that. It’s down to me to get the right ones, I know what I need in terms of the type of players and the personalities.
“The proper window is opening as you can go to every level to get players in the next week or so but the problem is we don’t have time.
“We’re playing catch-up already as it is. There’s a lot to be done but I took this job knowing that.
“The truth is we’re half a yard or a yard off it all over the place at the moment. That’s down to me to either get it out of the boys that I’ve got and if I can’t get it out of this group, I have to find the right ones to get it out of, however many that might be.”
