Ebbsfleet United boss Garry Hill to reduce his playing squad

Ebbsfleet manager Garry Hill has underlined the need to reduce his playing squad.

Three more members of the Fleet's coaching staff left the club last week, taking the total number of departures to six.

Daryl McMahon, Steve Gritt, David Jupp, Aaron McLean, Stacy Long and Michael Jordan have all gone and players are set to follow.

Hill said: "There's a very good squad here but we might be a touch high on numbers at the moment.

"That's no disrespect to any players but if you ask Garry Hill what he would like to be working with if he had control of what he was doing, he wants 18 bits of quality more than 22 bits of quantity. That's where I am.

"It is a big squad, we are aware that some staff members have gone this week and you have that with football players.

"It's not personal; we have got to make sure there's a structure in place going forward, on and off the football field, for the benefit and the balance, everywhere, for Ebbsfleet United Football Club."

Hill and his assistant Ian Hendon have overseen two 0-0 draws since taking over at Stonebridge Road.

Hill said: "We've inherited some very good players but there will be changes, personnel-wise, one way or the other, in time.

"But at the moment we're getting the back end right. We look very solid, we look hard to break down and that's not just the defence.

"You've seen midfield players and forwards getting themselves into areas, you've seen Corey Whitely several times running 50 or 60 yards back to get tackles, you see Sean Shields doing the same.

"I want work-rate. Work-rate always turns round and the quality will come through.

"It's like a bus. You wait there in the freezing cold for an hour and all of a sudden they all come. We've been waiting two games now and no goals so hopefully they're going to come."
