Ebbsfleet boss Dennis Kutrieb can understand fans’ frustration at a lack of transfer activity - but he won’t sign players who are chasing a pay day.
Kutrieb added highly-rated Wolves teenage keeper Louie Moulden on loan earlier this week, but he’s the only new face at Stonebridge Road since August.
The Fleet’s hand might be forced with striker Rakish Bingham sidelined through an ankle injury. But Kutrieb insisted that he won’t bring players in if they are not the right fit.
They’ve lost ground in the National League South promotion race after three defeats in four games, including Tuesday night’s 1-0 derby loss at Dartford.
“If we find the right player who can replace Raks for as long as he is not available, then we’ll look at it,” explained Kutrieb. “As long as it makes sense for us to do something. We have some things on the table that could be interesting for us and the player.
“Of course, we can bring in players and refresh the group, of course we can bring in centre-backs, centre-midfielders, whatever we want to - we can bring in every position.
“At the end of the day, we need to see two things. Are they better than the players we have? If we’re honest and not (thinking with our) emotions because we didn’t win a game.
“And are they the right fit for the group? Do they want to play for Ebbsfleet United or are they just coming for money? Do they just want to have a job to get into a football club?
“We talk to many players and it’s not easy to find the right players. I can understand people getting nervous and wanting to have new players but at the end of the day it needs to be the right fit. That’s my task and Damian’s (Irvine, chief executive) task, that we find the right players. It’s not easy in the winter window to find the right players.
“We always make our due diligence and we see if they’re better than the players we have or not. If not, then it doesn’t make sense.
“We always look at it, it’s not that we won’t do anything but it needs to be the right one. Everyone needs to have patience and belief and trust in the club because we must bring players in that are able to work hard for 90 minutes.
“We don’t need players that just walk around, get the shirt and get a bit of money - that’s not what I want to have.”
Bingham, who has scored 10 goals this season, is a major absentee for Ebbsfleet and while no timescale has been put on his return, Kutrieb confirmed he has not been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.
The Fleet started with Elliott Romain at Dartford but replaced him at half-time with Dominic Poleon.
“I think we will definitely have Raks back (this season) but we don’t know when that will be,” confirmed the Fleet boss. “We miss him and of course he’s a big miss because he can make an impact.
“We need to look forward and try to find the right solutions for us as a team. We can’t lose our heads, if we’re honest we played a good game at Dartford but it’s not enough if you don’t get the points.
“Elliott and Dominic can play together but I thought it was better to play with four at the back and two wide players. We (wanted to) dominate Dartford on the wings, which we did over the 90 minutes. Of course, they can play together, it’s no problem.”
Ebbsfleet’s next game is at home to St Albans on Tuesday.
