Justice as Bowry earns last gasp point

Hereford 1 - 1 Gravesend & Northfleet

EXPERIENCED midfielder Bobby Bowry scored a dramatic 89th minute equaliser to salvage a point for Gravesend on Tuesday night.

The Fleet deserved a point for their industrious second-half performance and Bowry delivered just when it looked as though they would be returning empty-handed.

Danny Slatter’s inswinging corner was only cleared as far as Bowry who found a way past goalkeeper Wayne Brown from the edge of the penalty area for his first goal in a Gravesend shirt.

Fleet boss Liam Daish said: "It was a good point for us. We went in goalless at half-time but came back well after we went a goal down.

"We had a real go at them and it was no more than we deserved at the end."

The Fleet were forced into making one change from the starting line-up that defeated Halifax with teenager Daniel Glozier coming in at left-back after illness had ruled out Justin Skinner.

Glozier did not let his team down and produced an accomplished display.

Daish said: "Daniel started and did really well as he got stronger as the game went on. He is only 18 and has a bright future ahead of him. He is keen to learn and has put pressure on Justin Skinner now."

Dean Beckwith and Alex Jeannin both went close early on for Hereford before Daniel Carey-Bertram forced Fleet keeper Craig Holloway into the first save of the night.

The home side enjoyed their fair share of possession but the Fleet more than held their own against a side tipped to be in the promotion shake-up.

Jay Saunders had the Fleet’s best opening of the first period but they fell behind eight minutes after the restart when Craig Stanley turned in Carey-Bertram’s cross.

Gravesend kept their shape and composure and took the game to their hosts, with Saunders somehow missing the target from close range when it seemed easier to score.

Daish made the bold move of going three-up front in the final 10 minutes and it eventually paid off for the visitors.

Daish said: "We went 4-3-3 to play with three strikers against their five at the back. Jay Saunders should have scored and we had them under a lot of pressure.

"Even when we went a goal down we kept going and played some good football."

It looked like being a fruitless task for the Fleet until Bowry equalised at the death. At least he was in good company as the Fleet’s goal was one of five equalisers scored in the closing minutes of games in a full Nationwide Conference programme on Tuesday.
