Dennis Kutrieb has been struck by new signing David Amoo’s humility following his move to Ebbsfleet.
Winger Amoo, 32, arrives at Stonebridge Road with an impressive CV, having started his professional career at Liverpool.
He made his debut for the Reds in a Europa League qualifier under Roy Hodgson and also counts Preston, Tranmere, Carlisle, Cambridge and Port Vale among his ex-clubs, along with a spell at Scottish side Partick.
He finished last season at Crewe Alexandra, having started the campaign with a Stevenage side who would go on to win promotion to League 1.
“He hasn’t talked about his past,” said Fleet boss Kutrieb.
“I think he’s very humble. He’s not coming in telling everyone where he’s played and how good he was and what he can do, and all these things.
“Everyone who knows us, and knows me, knows we wouldn’t sign this sort of player.
“He’s very humble and grounded.
“He can be proud of what he’s done in football so far but he’s not finished, otherwise he wouldn’t be with us now.
“He still has a point to prove where he wants to show he is good enough to play and that’s the reason he’s with us and that’s the reason I’m looking forward to working with him.”
Kutrieb is unaware of any offers for Amoo to remain in the Football League but believes Ebbsfleet’s location, close to the player’s London home, helped get the deal done.
He was among the scorers as Fleet started pre-season with a 6-0 win at Punjab on Saturday morning and should get more minutes under his belt at Tonbridge tonight (7.45pm).
“Players aren’t talking too much in the beginning about what offers they’ve had, so I can’t tell you too much about what options he had on the table,” said Kutrieb.
“But obviously it helped that he’s living close to us and so it’s not a big travel for him to come to Ebbsfleet.
“I think that helped in this move because obviously it’s always good for players at one point to play close to home.
“He’s played everywhere in the country and if he can play close to home now, that would definitely give him a boost and I’m pretty convinced he will show it on the pitch as well.
“I think if you see our signings, there are a few very interesting ones and he’s one of them.
“I’m just looking forward to getting to know them better, day by day, week by week, and we can see their strengths and their weaknesses, where we can make them better, where they are a good fit for us, where they can make us better.
“Our aim before we made any signings was for every single player from the five we signed to be a potential starter for us, so they should all play more than half of the games if everything goes well and we did the recruiting right.”
Greg Cundle, Shaq Coulthurst, Jack Wakely and Darren McQueen also struck against Punjab, along with a trialist forward, who Fleet continue to look at.
Kutrieb said: “I’m pretty impressed with him because he was with us the whole training week and he’s still with us and I like what I see.
“He’s a very young player, a very talented played, he scored a goal as well on Saturday, so he’s definitely interesting.”
The Tonbridge friendly presents Ebbsfleet with a good test against a side who took four points off them in National South last season.
It’s also an opportunity to play on 3G, good preparation for the new campaign, with Bromley, Dorking and Oxford all playing on artificial pitches in the National League.
Kutrieb said: “It’s a good 3G pitch at Tonbridge, and we need to get used to artificial pitches as well because there are three teams in the league which are playing on 3G, so we need to be ready.
“Tonbridge gave us two good games last season, they’re a good club, with a good manager, and they want to push on this season as well, so I think from many aspects it’s a good friendly for us.”
Ebbsfleet visit Isthmian South East Sittingbourne on Tuesday (7.45pm).
The National League fixtures were released on Wednesday, with Fleet starting the season at former Football League club Rochdale.
