Ebbsfleet manager Dennis Kutrieb says there’s only one more place left in his squad.
The Fleet boss continued his summer signings in the past week by securing former Gillingham defender Luke O’Neill, centre-back Haydn Hollis from Chesterfield and Kidderminster winger Omari Sterling-James.
It’s a Fleet squad bursting with experience and quality and it will take a special player to force their way through the door in pre-season.
It’s a position of strength as far as Kutrieb is concerned.
“We will have a look and adjust if we need to,” he stated. “I would say we’ve got one more spot left if we want to do something.
"We have a few things on the table to see if it makes sense or not, but not more than one player - and it might be no one.
“The good thing is I don’t need to worry as we already have 23 very good players in the squad. We just need to add on if we have the feeling that it would be a perfect fit for us. That’s a good situation to be in.
“The good thing is we can have a look at trialists if we want to. We don’t need to make a decision on a video basis, we can bring them in and have a look at them.
“It’s even better for us because we can have a deeper look and see how they get on with the team. He can have a look at how we do things.
“It’s a win-win situation for me in every thought of mine. We need to make sure if we do something else that we make the right decision.”
Kutrieb’s signings are certainly a statement of intent, the towering Hollis should help solve Fleet’s vulnerability to crosses, O’Neill will replace the void left by Tobi Adebayo-Rowling’s move to Notts County, and Sterling-James will add an extra dimension in attack.
“I think that’s what you can achieve if you do your homework and hard work in the off-season on potential signings, characters and history,” reflected Kutrieb.
“We tried to do as many signings as we can when players are close to us and they don’t have to travel too much.
“I’m quite happy with everything but they’re just the names, now we need to get everyone on the same page in the next five weeks and be ready to go on August 6. Now it’s time to work and not to talk.
“The good thing for us is that we have 17 players retained and they can make sure that they get the new changes in as we don’t want to stand still, we want to progress and improve.
“They need to get on the same page but mainly we need to get the fitness in, work on their load and be as fit as they can be.
"That’s the main point for us, we need to be fit and have a strong mindset.
“I’m not concerned at the moment because I know a big part of the squad is on the same page, and was on that page for the majority of last season. It’s definitely something to look forward to.”
Fleet start their pre-season matches at neighbours Punjab United on Friday (7pm) before they visit newly-promoted Chatham on Tuesday night.
“My expectation is always high,” added Kutrieb. “I’ve got expectations in every pre-season friendly.
“All the training sessions are more or less hard work and pre-season friendlies should be there to enjoy and play together as a team.
“Of course we will split the minutes in the beginning so everyone gets a chance to play and get ready. But apart from that I expect good things, a few patterns, the right shape, good communication and the right style of football.
“That’s what we did last season so just because we’ve had a five-week break we can’t get away from that. I want to see as much quality as possible after a tough training week.”
