Ebbsfleet boss Daryl McMahon is refusing to get carried away by his freescoring team.
The Fleet took their goal tally to 23 in their last five home games with a 7-0 thumping of Havant in the FA Cup last Saturday and after being disrupted by early-season injuries, McMahon believes his squad are now starting to deliver.
“There’s no secret,” he said. “We haven’t changed a single thing from the start of the season, apart from players getting fit.
“I was always confident once we got players out onto the pitch regularly. We had a disrupted pre-season and now I think we’re seeing what I hoped would happen, but it’s very early in the season so we won’t get carried away.”
Fleet’s forward play at Stonebridge Road has delighted the home fans in recent weeks, but McMahon is excited by his team’s defensive displays – they have conceded only twice in their last five games – just as much as their attacking prowess.
He said: “Across the season, defending is key because there will be games that you have to win 1-0. You’ve got to be a good defensive unit to do that and even though our scoring has been high recently I think our defending has been excellent.”
Fleet return to National League South action this Saturday with a trip to Weston.
The hosts were surprise league leaders in the first week of the season but a run of eight successive defeats means they now sit just above the relegation zone.
Dean Rance, Kenny Clark and Sean Shields are all expected to be available after injury.
Goals from Charlie Sheringham and Reiss Greenidge helped Fleet progress in the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday night. They beat Southern Counties East Sheppey United 2-1.
