Fleet boss Daryl McMahon admitted his team paid the price for failing to take their chances on Saturday.
The Fleet went down 1-0 to newly-relegated Chesterfield but it could have been a different story after Ebou Adams hit the bar in the first half.
Late pressure failed to produce an equaliser but it wasn’t for the want of trying.
“You’ve got to take your chances, we created enough chances, particularly in the first half,” admitted McMahon.
“I was happy with the first-half. I thought we played pretty well, created some really good opportunities, second half we lacked a bit of flow in our game.
“We still managed to get in and around their box numerous times but we had too many shots off target when we had the opportunity to hit the target.
“I could probably give you five chances around their box in the last 10 minutes and we’ve kicked it over the bar or shanked the cross wide under no pressure. We were lacking a little bit of quality.”
The Fleet’s start does not get any easier with a trip to Leyton Orient on Tuesday night but McMahon insisted they will pick up points sooner rather than later.
“It’s a long season,” added the Fleet boss, who confirmed Luke Coulson’s absence from his matchday 16 was not down to injury. “There are 45 games to go.
“We played some good stuff and we have to build on what we’ve done, with the good stuff and eradicate the bad stuff and hit the target a few more times.
“We know we’ve got a tough start but we’ll pick up points, don’t worry about that.”
