Daryl McMahon admitted Ebbsfleet panicked after going behind to Gateshead on Saturday.

Chris Bush's 13th-minute own goal proved decisive as Heed became the fourth visiting team to win at Stonebridge Road this season.

It was arguably the Fleet's worst performance of 2018-19 and McMahon's annoyance was clear after the game.

He said: "The tempo was rubbish in the first half. We went 1-0 down and panicked.

"We didn't hit anywhere near the level we should be hitting with the quality we've got in the group.

"The second half was a lot better. We dominated the ball but I still expect more from the group we've got.

"I know, as a manager, staff and players, we've raised expectations at this football club - which are probably unrealistic - but we have raised them and we have to try to attain them."

Ebbsfleet now have the second-worst home record in the National League but McMahon dismissed the idea of his players feeling under pressure at Stonebridge Road.

"We're playing in front of 1,300 people," he said. "Everyone in the team has played in front of more and it's just an excuse. I'm not having that.

"You're not at the Bernabeu getting booed by 100,000 people or at the biggest club in the world, we're a team that has predominantly been a mid-table or relegation Conference team and we're trying to improve on that. When we're at home, we have to be braver.

"Our fans were great behind the goal to be fair, singing for the whole game. I don't think they were flat, they were singing for the players and wishing a goal in.

"I don't use that as an excuse, I don't see it at all."

Ebbsfleet were missing centre-halves Dave Winfield and Kenny Clark through injury while midfielders Ebou Adams and Myles Weston were on international duty.

McMahon said: "All four players, if here and fit, would play. Winfield and Clark are two of the best centre-halves in the division, Westy's been outstanding for us and so has Ebou.

"After today, they've given themselves every chance, if they're fit next week, to play.

"There's a big difference when Winfield and Clark play because they demand off people. Every good football team has players demanding off each other and I thought we looked a little bit quiet, especially when they scored their goal.

"I don't expect my team to be quiet. I'm not quiet. I was never quiet and I don't expect anyone in my group to be quiet.

"You're playing football, go and enjoy it, go and work hard and go and have a will to win."
