Ebbsfleet boss Garry Hill was left bewildered by the mistake which led to Sutton's last-minute winner on Saturday.
Fleet were chasing a late winner, deep in stoppage-time, and looked like they were set to create one final chance.
But when Ebou Adams let a pass run through his legs on the edge of the penalty area, presumably thinking there was a team-mate behind him, Sutton broke.

They won a corner from which Gime Toure managed to force the ball over the line to hand the U's a 1-0 win.
Hill said: "It looks like Corey Whitely’s played the ball across and Ebou Adams has made a superb run, no-one tracking him.
"I don’t know, from then until now, for what apparent reason Ebou decided to throw a dummy. There was no-one near him.
"He let the ball go through his legs when he could have controlled the ball and taken a shot. I can’t understand it.
"From that, they picked the ball up, it’s caught us a little bit, gone out for a corner and after two or three balls, it’s ended up in the back of the net.
"I’m very disappointed from that point of view.
"I was very puzzled. I don’t know where he was or what he was thinking about but that’s led to the goal, which is disappointing.
"I don’t like to criticise a player to that extent but for the attacking position we were in, it was a strange thing."
Hill was, however, full of praise for his team's performance at Gander Green Lane, where they could easily have taken all three points.
He said: "We're a small squad but a squad with a lot of quality, playing with a lot of desire and the determination is very strong.
"To get nothing out of the game is frustrating but you can't go into a changing-room when you've taken 24 points out of 36, lost one in 14 before today's game, and have the paint come off the walls.
"They've been a credit to me, they've been a credit to the club and you can see the effort and the football out there.
"Even though we've only got 17 players at the club, if we can stay clear of injury, we can give anybody a good game."
Ebbsfleet hit the post twice in the second half and really came on strong in the closing stages.
Hill said: "You could see it going our way and we looked like the team that was going to win it because we were very dominant. They were penned in their half in a big way and we were totally in control of the game.
"I still believed that we could win it, deep into injury time.
"No disrespect to the lads who came off but (after) the changes we made, we played with a lot more energy and got balls into feet a lot better.
"We went with Myles Weston, Cody McDonald and Corey Whitely, we made the pitch big, stretched them and we were in a great position.
"One goal was always going to win it and they only had one corner and one shot in the second half. But that’s football.
"We have to clear our heads and brush ourselves down. It’s a disappointed changing-room that we’ve taken nothing out of the match."
