Ebbsfleet were knocked out of the FA Trophy on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Cray Wanderers on Saturday.
The Fleet trailed 2-0 with 16 minutes left but a last-gasp equaliser saw the tie go to spot-kicks, with Michael West sending his penalty over the bar.
Jamie Yila's first-half double had put Cray in charge but Rakish Bingham and Will Wood netted in the second half to take the game to penalties.
Fleet made seven changes from the team beaten by Maidstone on Tuesday night, with one eye on their league trip to Oxford City this midweek.
Cray, managed by former Fleet striker Danny Kedwell who had to name himself on the bench due to injuries, were given a golden chance inside the first minute when Fleet gave the ball away in their own penalty area but Chris Dickson blazed over.
Ebbsfleet had a strong wind in their favour in the first half, and created the majority of chances on a bitterly cold afternoon in driving rain at Hayes Lane.
Elliott Romain, making only his third Fleet start, headed against the bar on 11 minutes following a left-wing corner with Cray right-back Freddie Barton clearing the loose ball off the line.
Kieran Monlouis twice had efforts saved before the Fleet were denied the opening goal on 27 minutes. Will Wood appeared to turn in a deep cross from close range and the assistant gave the goal. But, with Cray players surrounding referee Joel Mannix, he consulted his linesman and disallowed the goal, apparently for handball.
Cray took the lead on 35 minutes. A generous free-kick gave them a great opportunity 20 yards from goal. Fjord Rogers’ low shot was only parried by keeper Chris Haigh and Yila reacted quickest to turn in the loose ball.
The hosts were in dreamland three minutes later when Yila turned Sefa Kahraman on the edge of the box and rifled an excellent right-foot finish into the far corner.
Fleet boss Dennis Kutrieb went into the book, presumably for dissent, and Romain was denied by keeper Turner on the stroke of half-time after he spilled Ben Chapman’s long-range shot.
Wood wasted two good openings for the Fleet early in the second half, who introduced Bingham and Craig Tanner in a bid to turn their fortunes around.
The third Fleet substitute, Alfie Egan, was denied on 68 minutes, Turner deflecting his effort over the bar after Romain’s flick.
Fleet got back into the game with 14 minutes left when Bingham shot home from just inside the box after a period of sustained possession from the visitors.
Romain's long-range shot was pushed behind by the impressive Turner with three minutes left before Egan shot straight at the keeper.
Fleet equalised in the 90th minute when Jack Paxman burst into the area and crossed for Wood to sweep home.
In the shoot-out Cray scored five out of five through substitute Anthony Cook, Rogers, Tom Hanfrey, Jai Reason and Dickson. Fleet's Bingham, Paxman and Ben Chapman netted but Michael West blazed their third penalty over the bar.
