GRAVESEND & Northfleet are to change their name to Ebbsfleet United amid speculation that the club are close to announcing the site for a new stadium.
Supporters were informed of the change at last night's specially convened open forum at Stonebridge Road. The club will retain their nickname of "The Fleet."
The name change comes into effect immediately having received the Football Association's blessing.
Behind the decision is the regeneration of the Thames Gateway which will see nearby Ebbsfleet Station - a mere goalkick from Stonebridge Road ground - become a focal point for international travel.
"We regard this as a big forward step forward," said chairman Jason Botley.
"The club has served well a loyal community fan base over the last 100 years.
"We have evolved through that period from Gravesend FC with the merger in 1946 with Northfleet United.
"Moving forward over the next 100 years and being able to adapt as the whole area is regenerated was an important driver for the club.
"Becoming Ebbsfleet United was a strategic decision made with the club's future in mind.
"The change will provide many new benefits, not least the ability to attract new commercial investment as North West Kent's growth continues to gather pace."
