Daryl McMahon has challenged new signing Antonio German to prove his quality over a sustained period at Ebbsfleet.
German, whose last club was Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League, has been training with Fleet for three weeks.
The club received international clearance for the 25-year-old on Tuesday and the former Gillingham striker is now set to make his debut in Saturday’s FA Cup tie at East Thurrock.
McMahon said: "I’ve seen him play a few times as a youth team player and a reserve player. As a young player at QPR, he was a big prospect and for whatever reason it didn’t work out for him there.
"He’s been to Wycombe and Brentford and had an impact at those clubs initially but not been able to sustain it.
"Maybe that’s something we can help him with, to make sure he can be a good player for a sustained amount of time rather than a flash in the pan.
"That’s down to him as well to go and grasp the nettle now and show he’s a good player."
German played under Martin Allen and Peter Taylor at Gills, mainly as a substitute, between 2013 and 2015, and had loan spells at Northampton and Aldershot before following Taylor to India.
He briefly returned to the UK in 2016, playing twice for Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership, before heading back to the ISL.
McMahon said: "He phoned me on the Sunday before the Aldershot game (on September 12), came in on the Thursday and he’s been here since then.
"He’s done well but needs a game. He’s not had a game for quite a while so we’ll get him involved on Saturday in some way.
"He needs to get match fit but he’s trained well and he’s working hard."
German’s arrival is timely, given that Darren McQueen will be out for around eight weeks with a knee injury. The striker went to see a specialist on Tuesday and was told he’s unlikely to play against before Christmas.
Andy Drury (calf) could feature on Saturday against an East Thurrock side sixth in National League South.
Ebbsfleet, who haven’t reached the first round since the KEH takeover in 2013, were knocked out by lower-league Merstham at this stage last season.
McMahon said: "We treat every team with the same respect and it’ll be no different with East Thurrock.
"They’re going well and have only lost one game this season. They’re a decent side but we go there in decent form ourselves.
"Sometimes you can go somewhere you don’t know at all and you’re unsure what to expect but, barring a few players in the group, we know what to expect."
Danny Kedwell returns to the squad following the birth of his third child and Sam Magri is back from international duty.
