Superbike star Kiyonari thrills Brands crowd

Japanese racer Ryuichi Kiyonari dominated round 10 of the World Superbike championship at Brands Hatch in front of almost 100,000 fans.

Just days after winning the Suzuka 8-hour showpiece in his own country, Kiyonari won both races on Sunday.

The 25-year-old claimed his maiden World Superbike win in the opening race, after seeing off the challenge from Troy Bayliss and Max Biaggi and clinched race two by beating Noriyuki Haga.

Championship leader Bayliss lead Sunday’s opener from pole while Kiyonari was down in seventh.

British wilcard rider Tom Sykes had to pull out with radiator damage during a scrap with the leading riders.

Kiyonari fought through the field and finally caught and passed Australian Bayliss on lap 21 and took the win with a gap of less than two tenths of a second.

Bayliss headed the second race but was soon hunted down by Japanese pair Haga and Kiyonari.

Haga’s lead didn’t last long and after a battle with his fellow countryman it was Kiyonari who took the chequered flag.

Kiyonari said: “My bike was very good over the weekend and I was pleased to win at Brands Hatch - it’s like a second home and I want to say thanks to the British fans.”

Corser eventually settled for third behind Haga.

“Ryuichi was the better man,” said Corser. “I struggled with grip so I was holding on, looking over my shoulder to see who would catch me next!”
