Ebbsfleet United striker Matt Godden insists promotion is more important than how many goals he scores this season

Matt Godden is on course for his most prolific season but promotion with Ebbsfleet is the only thing on his mind.

Godden’s goal at Gosport on Saturday was his seventh of the campaign and he also netted in the abandoned game against Weston.

But more importantly, he’s helped the Fleet open up an eight-point lead at the top of Vanarama National League South with almost a third of the season gone.

Godden said: "I’m in a good place at the moment. If you include the goal against Weston, that’s eight for the season.

"I feel confident but more importantly, the team are flying and we’re creating lots of chances. I don’t think it’ll be long before we give someone a good smashing.

"I want to do well myself but the main objective is to go up. I want to score as many as I can but I really want to go up with Ebbsfleet."

Asked to recall his best season in front of goal, the 24-year-old admitted: "I don’t know.

"I had so many loan spells and I’ve played so many reserve games. I’d probably put it in the 20 bracket but that would have been for three different clubs in one year.

"I had seven years at Scunthorpe and had some good times there but I love playing and that’s one of the main reasons I moved down.

"It’s been like starting from scratch. I had to find my feet last year and get used to the
league.

"But it’s made a massive difference in all areas of my life. Coming home to my family and friends and playing for one of the local clubs makes it better because people can actually come and watch me play."

Godden has started all but one of Ebbsfleet’s league games and he came off the bench to score in the other.

He’s formed a good strike partnership with Danny Kedwell and the pair are keeping Adam Cunnington on the bench.

Godden said: "That’s why we’ve done so well this year. People, when they get in the side, can’t have an off game.

"You’ve got to put in a minimum 7/10 every week because if you don’t, there are players on the bench and even in the stands who will come in and fill your shoes.

"They want your place so you do as much as you can to keep it."
