Ebbsfleet United winger Robbie Willmott excited about the club's future plans after meeting Daryl McMahon

New signing Robbie Willmott has rubbished the suggestion that money was the motivation for his move from Newport County to Ebbsfleet United.

Willmott became the Fleet’s third summer signing last Thursday, having been released by the Welsh club during a "45-second phone call" with new manager Terry Butcher.

The winger was linked with Gillingham – where his former Newport boss Justin Edinburgh is now in charge – as well as several big clubs in the National League.

But he chose Fleet and insisted it wasn’t for the cash.

Willmott said: "That’s everyone’s first thought, with me going so low, but it was never about money.

"I could have gone to a number of clubs and got more money. I could have waited for offers and haggled with clubs but I’m excited about Ebbsfleet.

"When I met Daryl (McMahon) at the ground he showed me and my agent the future plans for Ebbsfleet.

"Behind the scenes it pretty much is a League club – so now they just need to get there."
