Ebbsfleet United manager Josh Wright reacts to 3-2 National League defeat at home to Tamworth

Ebbsfleet manager Josh Wright couldn’t hide his disappointment after five minutes of madness cost them a morale-boosting win on Saturday.

The Fleet were more than a match for Tamworth in the National League but they turned a one-goal lead into a 3-1 deficit after shipping three soft goals in quick succession just before half-time.

“That comes down to five minutes,” said Wright. “Three goals in five minutes is nowhere near good enough.

“That's a lack of concentration, a mindset, a mentality. I looked up at 38 minutes and it's 1-0, and before I know it, we're 3-1 down, and that game has literally gone away from us in those five minutes.

“On top of that, I'm going to add another 10-15 seconds on that. We get a free-kick at the end of the game, my goalkeeper goes up and we take it short.

“Again, that just falls down to mindset and everything that shouldn't happen. I'm not saying I'm blaming the game in that one moment, but it's moments like that, and that is what the three goals are.

“I've seen the goals back and I can watch them all day. They are soft, they're weak, they're poor, poor goals to concede, and I'm so disappointed because, other than that, we were playing some really nice stuff in the first half and at times in the second half.

“The other thing that guts me is we get to 3-2 and (you think) come on then, let's kick on then, let's smell blood.

“I mentioned war in the changing room three or four times before, let's smell blood and let's go and get them again when they're vulnerable, like what we were at one, when they got one, we ended up (conceding) two and three. That's what can happen.

“I'm really disappointed with those five minutes because that is what ultimately has cost us a positive result.”

Wright admitted the defending was in keeping with the Fleet’s season.

They’ve been in good positions but, for whatever reason, are unable to get the result over the line.

He added: “I think the bottom line is, I keep saying mental, but it's that belief.

“When we got one, we needed another goal. And it's because we've still got that fragility about us, and we're still, as I say, fragile, and we have to believe more.

“When we get one goal, it's not a case of, oh, we can just see it through, because we're not good enough.

“We're not good enough to see it through at 1-0. Even at two, I'd be a little bit nervous. That's where we are.

“That's just where the season is, and that's where we are as a group, sadly. We need to capitalise when we get our tails up, and when we smell blood and when we land that punch, we have to kick on again.

“At 1-0, we steadied and we did okay for a bit, but then all of a sudden, it completely flips. The ship goes from sailing nice and smoothly to suddenly tipping and coming back the other way.

“In the second half, we grow into the game, we change the formation, we make a couple of subs, and we get the goal. And it's like, well, go on then. Here's when they're a little bit under it, and they're thinking we are going to have to dig deep and we sort of step off it again.

“It's like we've got the foot on the pedal and the gas, and all of a sudden, we just bring it off. It's those little things that turn into big things that's hurt me. You can tell I'm animated, I'm frustrated, because I didn't see those four or five minutes coming.

“I’m really disappointed because they've come here and they won't believe that they've got three goals in five minutes like that.”

There was one major positive for Ebbsfleet, a stunning 25-yard strike from George Moncur who ran from inside his own half following an excellent lay-off by Dominic Samuel.

Former Gillingham and Blackburn forward Samuel brings an added dimension to their play with his ability to link midfield and attack.

“It was a fantastic goal. I thought Dom Samuels was superb, and he played a nice little role in that goal,” added the Fleet boss.

“And that's what George does. In terms of what I want more from him, I've been on him about him shooting. I had a bit of banter with him after the goal, as I want him to shoot more, because that's exactly what he can do.

“I thought he was top drawer again, and it's just a shame that we didn't build on that and kick on.”
