A COUPLE gave new meaning to the term “people carrier” after their baby was born on the front seat in their driveway.

Nicky and Andy Morters were forced to take emergency measures after Nicky went into labour and gave birth at 3am.

Mother-of-four Nicky, 32, of Mickleburgh Hill, Herne Bay, said: “We had phoned the hospital to let them know we were on our way but when I got to the car, I knew I had no time at all.

“Andy rushed back to the house to get my mum to call an ambulance. He came back to the car and the baby almost fell out straight into his arms on the front seat of our Volkswagen people carrier.”

She stressed: “We didn’t panic but I wasn’t sure about when to cut the umbilical chord. The first thing I did was wrap the baby in my cardigan as we had no towels in the car.”

Andy, 36, said: “We had no time to think or plan anything. It just had to be done. I’m glad Nicky had the baby then and it meant she could have a drink on Christmas Day!"

An ambulance crew arrived shortly afterwards to provide warmth and a little more expertise. Andy said: “The crew were great and there were no complications at all.”

The couple named the baby Millie. She is their third daughter.
