Bay Day spectacular set for take-off in Herne Bay on Sunday

Lancaster bombers, Spitfire and Hurricane fighters, parachute teams and supersonic fighter aircraft are set to soar over the skies of Herne Bay this weekend.

It will be the first time in more than 50 years that a Canadian and British Lancaster will fly together – fittingly in the town where the Dambusters’ bouncing bombs were tested by Sir Barnes Wallis.

The flight will be one of many highlights during the free air display, organised by the Bay Promo Team on the seafront on Sunday.

Organiser Gerald McCarthy said: “For the town to be at the centre of the Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb story is one of the reasons the application for the Canadian and British Lancaster worked in our favour.

“We are calling the event Bay Day in anticipation of the big crowds. It won’t just be a fly-past either, people can expect to see what these Second World War planes can do.

“It’s a real coup for the town to have them. And for those that like a bit of adrenaline, like me, we have a £70 million Typhoon fighter jet too.

“We’ve also got an RAF display team, who will be aiming to hit helium-filled balloons with their stunts, and Justyn Gorman aerobatics.

“There will be a parachute team landing right next to the Central Bandstand to kick off the whole day. Then there will be music with XYZ and Rubber Biscuit performing on stage near the Clock Tower.”

Mr McCarthy added that money to bring the exciting aircraft to the town has been secured from local sponsors, including Cains Amusements, Terry Nicholls and APC Kent deliveries.

Last week the Bay Promo Team also secured £1,000 from Canterbury City Council’s opportunities fund to stage the set piece event.

The free event will run from midday until 3pm, with the music and entertainment continuing until 7pm.
