County councillor John Law died at the weekend.

Fellow KCC members of all parties have paid tribute to a “really lovely man”.

Cllr Law, who was in his late seventies, was a member for Herne Bay, and his tireless work for the youth of the town helped save a school and build a £1million youth club. The Conservative councillor suffered a stroke at the home he shares with wife Jean, a Canterbury city councillor, in Alexandra Road, Whitstable.

He was taken to the QEQM hospital in Margate but an operation to remove a blood clot on the brain was not successful. He died in the early hours of Sunday.

KCC Labour member Cllr Clive Hart said: “We were from different sides of politics but we shared a love of east Kent which bound us together. It was an honour and a pleasure to work closely with him.

“John really was a lovely man. I truly will miss him and County Hall just won’t be the same without him.”

Roger Gale, Conservative MP for north Thanet, said: “John made a very significant contribution to Herne Bay.

“He worked tirelessly to secure youth facilities in the town. I don’t think the Parkside Centre would be in construction now if it wasn’t for him.”

The Parkside Centre is the £1milllion youth club now being built at the edge of Memorial Park, Herne Bay. Cllr Law played a pivotal role last year in securing funding.

He also campaigned successfully to save St Philip Howard Catholic Primary School when falling pupil numbers put the school at risk.

Cllr Law was elected to KCC some seven years ago.
