Will there be a new dawn for Herne Bay's historic pier?

DO YOU want Herne Bay pier rebuilt or is the cost just too extortionate?

The Herne Bay Gazette wants to know what you think and has launched a telephone poll to find out.

The £40 million price tag originally suggested for the construction is a key issue. Finding private investors prepared to put up the cash is even more crucial.

Herne Bay is buzzing with opinions on the ambitious project and a feasibility study is now being undertaken by Canterbury council’s consultants.

Their main concern is whether a pier could justify the building expense and then be self-financing once up and running.

Hotels, Business and Leisure Herne Bay has been pushing for a pier rebuild for years.

The idea was grasped last year by Cooperman Vision, which formed a consortium to take it forward in consultation with the council.

They envisage a pier with a major sealife centre, arena seating up to 2,500 and a mini London Eye or tower at the end, all linked by a mono-rail.

The pier was built between 1896 and 1899. It was visited by thousands at the peak of its popularity but closed in 1968 when it became unsafe.

Let us know whether you support a rebuild and, if not, why not?
