Striking images of a multi-million pound development that will change the face of the centre of Herne Bay have been revealed.

Canterbury City Council has released its plans for the former Tivoli arcade in Central Parade.

It bought the run-down site in March with a view to transforming it into an “innovative and thriving quarter”.

The building, as well as land behind it, will be turned into 33 homes -10 of which will be used by the local authority to house elderly people looking to downsize - a retail unit and two workshops.

The development will also involve linking the two council-owned car parks either side of Beach Street to create a promenade between Central Parade and the centre of town.

City council spokesman Rob Davies said: "The aim is to create a high-quality development and transform this tired area of the town."

He added that the local authority will submit a planning application for the project "in the next few weeks".

The council is holding a public event displaying the plans between 4.30pm and 8.30pm tonight at Beach Creative in Herne Bay.

Residents are invited to attend and give their views.
