Armed police close street in Herne Bay

Armed police closed off a road in a town centre last night after a man was reported to be carrying an air rifle through the streets.

Images show officers in Richmond Street in Herne Bay after they were called at 10.26pm last night.

A man is believed to have carried an air rifle walking through the High Street, although no weapon was discharged.

Police cordoned off a road in Herne Bay

Police arrested a 46-year-old man from Whitstable on suspicion of possessing a loaded air rifle in public.

Officers recovered the weapon from an address on Richmond Street.

No one was injured.

In a separate incident also on Richmond Street, an officer on patrol was stopped at 9.52pm by a man who reported he had been assaulted by a group of youths.

The man suffered a facial injury and ambulance crews were called.

Inquiries are ongoing.
