Repairs to the Avenue of Remembrance in Herne Bay Memorial Park began today.

Damage was originally caused by a clumsy lorry driver who collided with the gate and stonework.

The incident left the remembrance sign snapped in two, and the metal sign commemorating 1918, the year the First World War ended, also had to be removed.

In May campaigner Vince McMahan raised concerns that work wouldn’t be carried out in time for the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of the conflict.

But this week work was started by repair the signage and restore the memorial to its former glory.

Council spokesman Robert Davies said: "Repair work started this week. The concrete pillar is the first to be repaired and once that is complete and settled, the archway sign will be put back up.

"We hope to have this finished by mid-July, weather permitting."
