Bomb disposal teams have descended on a seafront after a fisherman caught a potential war mine.

A van marked ‘Royal Navy bomb disposal’ and a rigid inflatable boat are at Neptune Car Park on Central Parade in Herne Bay this afternoon.

Police were also called to the scene, where a suspected wartime ordnance has been pulled from The Channel.

Chris Attenborough, chairman of the Whitstable Fishermans Association, told KentOnline: “One of the fishermen has caught something that resembles a mine.

“It’s very large, heavy, cylindrical and has what looks like a propellor at one end.”

A police spokesman added: “We were contacted this morning following the discovery of suspected wartime ordnance by a fishing boat off the coast of Herne Bay.

“Officers attended along with HM Coastguard and an EOD team from the Ministry of Defence, who are dealing with the object.”

The Royal Navy has been contacted for further information.
