Armed police spotted outside the Smugglers Inn in Herne Bay

Four people – including a 14-year-old boy – have been arrested after armed police were spotted near a pub last night.

Multiple emergency services vehicles were parked outside the Smugglers Inn, in School Lane, Herne Bay, at around midnight.

Officers were called to the scene at around 9.40pm after reports that passengers in a car had threatened people in another car in Central Parade.

A spokesman added: “Armed officers attended the scene following concerns that a possible weapon was present and a 19-year-old man, a 17-year-old girl and two boys, aged 17 and 14, were all arrested on suspicion of public order offences.”

No weapons were recovered during the arrests and all four, who are from Herne Bay, remain in custody while inquiries continue.

One witness captured dramatic footage of the incident.

Speaking over a video where multiple cars can be seen and an officer with a gun, they said: “They’ve all got their guns out.

“They’ve literally all got their guns resting on the car. No way.”

Another woman who lives in the town reported seeing four police cars blocking the road outside the pub as well as a helicopter overhead.

A third added: “We live in Chestfield and last night we must have had about eight or more unmarked police cars fly back and forth.

“We could hear the helicopter go over so wondered if something was going on.”
