The closure of a popular town centre wine bar has been described as the “end of an era” by regulars.
Lisa Stockman and partner Tony have called time after almost 16 years at The Wine Bar in Herne Bay.
Mrs Stockman shared the sad news with customers, saying “something had to give” to make them give up the Mortimer Street venue, which has long been a fixture in the town.
“After nearly 16 years the time has come for us to officially tell you all we are now closed”, she said in a statement.
“Tony’s well overdue to retire and I’ve not been well for a while now.
“Something had to give.
“We would like to thank you all for the support and loyalty you’ve shown us over the years. For the laughter and the tears we’ve shared. You’ve no idea how hard this decision was to make.
I feel so sad you guys are not there anymore. But you have both worked so hard it is definitely time to breathe, relax and kick back...
“You have been our lives for so long know that we’re actually feeling a bit lost and so sad.
“All we can say now is, it’s been a blast.”
Mrs Stockman also paid tribute to long-term employee Annabel Ridgway, describing her as “our lynchpin, our friend, most loyal supporter”.
News of the closure has been met with widespread disappointment from those who have enjoyed the wine bar over the years.
Customer Sharon Reilly wrote: “So sad to read this but so totally get it. I will miss popping in for a little bit of home.
“I feel so sad you guys are not there anymore. But you have both worked so hard it is definitely time to breathe, relax and kick back.”
Tony Symons added: “Good luck to you both. You've given a lot of fun. Herne Bay will miss you. Now it's time for the next bit. All the very best.”
Juliet O’Connor posted: “ The Wine Bar has been a part of my life ever since I moved to Herne Bay and was my dad’s favourite haunt.
“I have so many memories of fun times and laughs there, which will never be forgotten.
“I’m sad to see you go but happy you’ve made the right decision for you.”
Helen Troth described the bar as a “gem of a place”, adding: “Herne Bay won’t be the same without you. But wishing you both a very happy retirement.”
