A doting grandfather killed in a crash while cycling has been described as a “loving family man” by loved ones.
David Cox, from Herne Bay, was involved in a collision with a blue Hyundai i30 on the Old Thanet Way at just after 10am on Sunday, January 28.
He sustained serious head injuries and was airlifted to King’s College Hospital in London, where he died 12 days later on Friday, February 9.
His widow, Pricilla Cox, was at St Martin’s Church in Herne when she received the news. “The police rang me just as I was leaving,” she said.
“They drove me up to the hospital in London, where I spent as much time as I could at David’s bedside.
“He was sedated when he went there and he never regained consciousness.”
Mr Cox had lived in Herne Bay since his marriage to Pricilla in 1972 and had two sons – Christopher, 40, and Jonathan, 42 – and six grandchildren.
“David was a family man – he loved his grandchildren,” Mrs Cox said.
“One of my sons said he loved going on holidays with him where they were able to take part in all sorts of fun activities like football and swimming.”
Mr Cox was a popular member of the community and was heavily involved with St Martin’s Church and the Friends of Strode Park.
“He was the church treasurer for about 30 years and everyone there has been very supportive,” Mrs Cox said.
“I’ve had a lot of messages saying what a great man he was, how everyone will miss him and what a brilliant bridge player he was.”
Mr Cox was born in Ramsgate in 1946 and attended Chatham House Grammar School, where his father was a housemaster.
He forged a career as a computer analyst, spending most of it at Lloyd’s of London.
His funeral will be held on March 6 at St Martin’s Church.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 43-year-old man from Herne Bay, was arrested in connection with the incident and has been released under investigation.
