There was plenty of pomp and pleasure on the promenade as the Victorian themed Herne Bay Festival got under way with a colourful lantern parade.
Hundreds gathered for the parade from Lane End to the Clock Tower, and were adorned in their finest 19th century attire, as befitting the agreeable occasion.
Organisers are hoping to continue the feel good factor after the success of the Carnival and Air Show in recent weeks.
Tomorrow’s events include a lunchtime piano recital at the United Reformed Church in Mortimer Street, as well as rockpooling at the Reculver Visitor Centre at 1pm.
The KEMS Macclesfield Concert Band from 3pm in the Bandstand, and the fourth heat of Herne Bay Rocks at The Ship from 7.30pm.
Next weekend is also set to be packed with events. On Friday night there is the final of the Herne Bay Rocks competition at the King’s Hall at 7pm.
Meanwhile on Saturday there will be the finals of the Bay Factor singing competition on the pier from 12pm to 3pm, as well as alfresco ballroom dancing at the Clock Tower from 11am.
There will also be a spectacular range of events at the Clock Tower, including the Herne Bay’s Got Talent competition from 1.15pm to 5.15pm, then performances performances by the winners of Herne Bay Rocks, and the headline act of Geno Washington from 8pm to 9pm.
It will be rounded off with a huge fireworks display on the seafront from 9.15pm. For the full range of events on this weekend visit www.hernebayfestival.com.
