A dad-of-one who helped save the life of a man who collapsed in the street has written a song about the troubling experience.
Dan Brooks, 28, was loading the boot of his car in Pier Avenue, Herne Bay, last September when he saw a man in his late 40s slump to the floor.
He called for an ambulance, but was told by the operator he would have to try to resuscitate him.
“I was trained in it, but never thought I’d be doing it,” he said.
“I just got down on my knees and ended up doing it for 12 minutes.
“All that was going through my head was that I was supposed to be watching Tottenham in the Champions League that evening and all of a sudden I’m trying to save this bloke’s life. I was thinking ‘how does this happen?’”
When the paramedics arrived they cut open the man’s jumper, revealing track marks and a girl's name tattooed on his chest.
“All I could think is he has a daughter and she’s got no idea where her old man is,” Dan said.
For the next three weeks he did not know whether the man had survived, until a chance encounter in the High Street.
“I got a tap on the shoulder and the bloke asked if I had any change for him to get back to Margate,” he said.
“I didn’t recognise him at first until I turned round again and realised it was him. He had a distinctive look and didn’t look in a good way.”
Dan, who lives in the centre of Herne Bay, has seen the man several times since.
Each time he says he is disturbed by the tight grip drink and drugs seemingly has on the man's life.
It was from these experiences the idea for his song, Dedication for the Medication, was spawned.
“It’s about him being dedicated to the wrong stuff,” he explained.
“I think he’s throwing his life away because of a drug and I think it’s heartbreaking.
“If I had the time again I’d say to him ‘what are you up to? You can’t cheat death more than once’.”
Dan has performed the song with his band Naughty Melodies – which includes three others from Herne Bay, Dan Evans, Lee Bates and Jack Beasley.
The music video for it, which depicts the events from last year, has been viewed more than 6,000 times and shared online by almost 150 people.
“We just want to push the song as far it can go,” continued Dan, who is the group's lead singer.
“We’ve got a sound that’s unique to us. Some people say it’s a cross between Oasis, the Arctic Monkeys and the Libertines.”
