It is said the alcohol was sold to a minor in the Station Road store earlier this month.

The force submitted the application for a review to Canterbury City Council in a bid to prevent crime and disorder, and to protect children from harm.

A notice of the review – shared publicly by the local authority – states the force “received a complaint regarding underage sales at the premises”.

But little detail has been provided regarding the allegation at this stage.

And the hearing is set to be held in private – with the outcome expected to be made public after the meeting.

A police spokesman said: “We have applied for a review of the premises licence of Kaneera Express in Station Road, Herne Bay under the Licensing Act 2003.

“The application, which was made following a report that alcohol was sold to a child in the store on March 3, will be heard at a future meeting of Canterbury City Council's Licensing Committee.”

A city council spokesman added: "Kent Police has requested a licensing review for Kaneera Express due to concerns raised about underage sales. A date for this has not been set yet.

"This hearing will be held in private but the outcome will be made public once it has concluded.

"We cannot comment further at the current time."

Kent Police requested the hearing be held in private as details relating to the welfare of a child and an active police investigation are likely to be discussed.

Licence reviews allow parties to present evidence to a licensing committee panel aiming to address problems with premises that hold a licence.

A panel can decide the relevant course of action, such as revoking, suspending or amending the licence by adding conditions or restrictions.

They can also refuse the review so the premise can continue operating in its current form.

KentOnline visited the premises where staff told us the manager was off. We passed our contact details over but did not hear back from the business.
