Rising Sun in Beltinge to hold man versus food challenge

Can you devour about 6,000 calories of burger, onion rings, chips and milkshake inside 45 minutes? Well, a pub will be holding a man versus food competition next month to see if you can.

The Rising Sun in Reculver Road, Beltinge, is organising a fete for Saturday, August 18, to raise money in memory of one of its regulars Sheena Andrews, a mother-of-two who died in May after a long battle with cancer.

Eight people have already entered the man versus food competition, which will take place on the day.

The pub’s head chef, David Waddington, wanted to make it as “doable” as possible.

“There are four burgers, four rashers of bacon, six slices of cheese, two jumbo sausages, six giant chilli onion rings, four burger buns and a pound of chips,” he said.

“This will be followed by a chocolate milkshake with whipped cream and a chocolate bar in it.

“I’m a big guy, but I don’t think I’d be able to do it. But my other chef thinks it’s going to be easy and he’s entered the competition.”

Mrs Andrews had been a teacher at St Paulinus Primary School in Dartford for more than 17 years.

It had been an aim of hers to build a sensory room designed to aid disabled pupils’ learning at the school. All proceeds from the fete will go towards paying for it.

“It helps these kids to learn in different ways,” Mr Waddington continued.

“We’re going to have stalls, bouncy castles, barbecues and a charity chest wax, as well as a man versus food challenge.”

To enter, call the Rising Sun on 01227 634560 or message it on Facebook.
