A coastguard spokesman confirmed it was called - along with the fire service - to the rescue of a man stuck in mud by Herne Bay Pier this morning.

They added: "The coastguard received reports just after 8.30am, and rescue teams from Herne Bay and Margate were sent to the scene to assist.

"The casualty was successfully recovered."

The fire service confirmed it was to Herne Bay pier to rescue a man stuck in mud "up to his knees, having been walking on the coast at low tide.

"Two fire engines and the Coastguard attended, and inflatable mud paths were used to reach the man and bring him to safety," a spokesman said.

"Following this rescue, firefighters are urging people to take care when walking out on beaches during low tide, to avoid areas of sinking mud, and to be aware of tide times to avoid being cut off from the shore."
