He branched out with another greengrocers in Birchington in 1983 and later relocated his first store from East Street to William Street, where it continues today.

Peter retired in 2004 after decided against renewing the lease on the shop in Birchington. But he remained active in helping to run the Herne Bay store with son Andrew and grandson Christian, right up until the Covid pandemic.

Andrew says his father kept the business going strong, despite the challenges facing the high street, due to his traditional values of hard work, fresh produce and fair pricing, topped with good service.

“He was quite rightly a legend in the local greengrocery world and I'm sure there are many who'll remember him for the wonderful man he was,” he said.

Peter came from a family of market gardeners and worked for David Pettit greengrocers in Thanet before deciding to set up on his own.

“Dad was very knowledgeable and a hands-on sort of person who not could sit down and do nothing for long,” said Andrew.

“Even after he retired, he liked to keep his hand in with the business and help out.

“He was also a bit of a DIY expert, having virtually built his house in Beltinge, as well as gardening.

“Since we posted the sad news of his passing on our Facebook page, it’s been very heartening to see so many warm messages.”

Dozens of former customers and staff responded with fondness for the greengrocer.

“It was my first ever full-time job and I loved my time there so much.

“Peter was such a lovely kind man to work for and so passionate about his beautiful business.

“He taught me so much and I will be forever grateful.”

Dusty Merritt added: “The best greengrocer in Kent and a lovely man who will be missed.”
