A woman suffered burns to her hands after a fire took hold in her flat, destroying her kitchen.
The blaze broke out in her Herne Bay home after a plastic chopping board left on a hob caught alight when it was accidentally switched on.
Two fire engines attended the scene in Braid Drive just before 9.30am today and crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames. Crews left just before 11am.
The kitchen was completely destroyed and the rest of the property was left with smoke damage.
The injured woman was checked as a precaution after suffering slight burns to her hands.
The fire service's volunteer response team was also on hand to give advice to the affected residents.
Crews are reminding people to make sure cooking surfaces are kept clear of anything that could catch alight.
Firefighters attend about 200 accidental kitchen fires every year, which are commonly caused by items being left on or too close to the hob, such as tea towels, oven gloves, washing baskets and in this case, a chopping board.
To help reduce these types of incidents, KFRS has launched its ‘Hook it, Don’t Cook it’ campaign.
It encourages people to remember to keep their hobs clear to keep everyone safe.
