Herne Bay joint-boss John Embery is hoping new signing Ben Gorham will help cut out the defensive mistakes his team are making.

Embery said individual errors cost his side any chance of getting points from their home match with third-placed Corinthian Casuals last weekend.

His side face another tough test on Saturday when they travel to fourth place Greenwich Borough in Bostik South and he wanted another defender to join his ranks.

Former Bay man Gorham has been playing for Sittingbourne and Embery said: “We felt we needed another defender and someone who would not make mistakes.

“Ben was at Herne Bay last season and we’ve been keeping an eye on how he has been doing. I’m hoping it will be a signing that will help the club and the team.

“He is a defender first and a footballer second. We have got a lot of good footballers in the side who like to play and maybe don’t put it out of play when they should.”

Bay lost 4-1 to Corinthian whose opener came courtesy of a Jono Richardson own goal. By the half-hour mark the visitors led 3-0.

Nassim Dukali got one back for the home side but any chance of a comeback was snuffed out by Corinthian’s fourth.

Embery said: “All four goals we conceded were down to ourselves. The whole game we were on top but now we’ve got to iron out the mistakes.

“I was frustrated with the scoreline. When we played last week (the 3-0 home defeat to Hastings) we deserved to get beaten.

“We played against a side who pass the ball and we normally do well against those sort of teams but we can’t keep shooting ourselves in the foot.”

The defeat leaves Herne Bay 15th. After Saturday’s trip to Greenwich, they visit South Park on Tuesday.

Embery added: “These games are a good learning curve for them and will help them know what it takes to win these games. It’s a learning process for us.”
