Sam Denly says he won’t get carried away despite Herne Bay’s positive start to the new season – which could become a flying start over the next few days.

Bay made it four points from a possible six, and back-to-back clean sheets to begin the Ryman League, Division 1 South season, with a 1-0 win over Hythe Town at Winch’s Field on Tuesday night.

Next up, Bay face Walton Casuals – pointless after two games – at Winch’s Field on Saturday with a trip to Three Bridges, who have drawn one and lost one, to follow at Winch’s Field on Tuesday.

Denly said: “I would have taken four points from six, for sure, though I think we dropped two points on Saturday.

“We won’t get carried away, we’re playing well and working hard.

“We’ve kept two clean sheets and we’ll go into Saturday full of confidence. If we play like we have been there’s no reason why can’t get another win.”

He added: “Last season we were very inconsistent. I’m hoping we can lose that tag this year and show more consistent performances – I’m looking for that on Saturday."

Defender Connor Sanders' first goal for Bay claimed the points, latching on to a short back-pass, holding off the last man and coolly slotting home past former Winch's Field stopper Dan Eason after only 11 minutes.

However he faces a lengthy lay-off after being taken to hospital with a damaged shoulder blade later in the game.
