Herne Bay boss Sam Denly says last day win at Hastiings was great way to end the season.

The Winch’s Field outfit finished on a high with a 2-1 win at Hastings, which knocked the Sussex side out of play-off contention and let in neighbours Faversham instead.

Denly said: “Missing out on the play-offs was disappointing but we wanted to finish higher than ninth, which we did last season and with more points and have done both, so overall it’s been a good campaign.”

Denly was delighted with the final-day win, hailing it as among their best of the season given the absence of several players.

He said: “It was excellent, maybe the pressure being off helped, and allowed us to play with a bit of freedom.

“We were up against a good side needing to win to make the play-offs and with five key players missing.

“There has been a bit of a question mark over some players over the last few weeks but they have finished the season well.

The season may be over on the field but Denly is already planning ahead.

He said: “It will be a short break because I will be on the phone talking to players. I am also thinking of making an addition on the coaching side as well.”

Meanwhile, Tommy Warrilow has attracted several former team-mates of Lee Browning to play in his testimonial against Bay at Winch’s Field on Sunday, May 15 (1pm).

Browning, forced to retire from the game on medical grounds, played under Warrilow for three seasons at Tonbridge Angels.
