Herne Bay boss Sam Denly says his side are the outsiders in the race for the Ryman League Division 1 South play-offs

Sam Denly admits Herne Bay are the outsiders in a three-horse race to clinch the final place in the Ryman League, Division 1 South play-offs.

Last day opponents Whyteleafe are favourites, five points clear of Bay, with a game in hand, while the team below them, seventh placed Worthing are also still in contention after a 7-0 win at South Park on Tuesday night.

Denly said: “Whyteleafe have got some hard games but it’s in their hands. If they win five out of their last six, fair play to them.

“All we are looking to do is to concentrate game by game, looking to win them, beginning against Redhill on Saturday and see where it takes us.”

The Surrey club, beaten 3-0 at home by neighbours Merstham on Tuesday night, arrive third from bottom and battling to avoid relegation, having just avoided the drop last season.

Denly added: “They are coming with something to play for and will be scrapping to get a result.”

Sam Hasler’s winner earned Bay Saturday’s 1-0 win at Corinthian Casuals – their fifth successive win on the road – leaving them second in the away-form table.

That is in stark contrast to the start of the season when they couldn’t buy a win and Denly admitted: “It’s a crazy situation and there was no reason why we struggled because we enjoy travelling.

“We have finally clicked but we were so bad early on. Who knows where we would have been now had we started better?"

Denly has received mixed news on the injury front, with midfielder Ben Brown ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, which could need surgery.

But striker Danny Williams is back in contention after initial fears he had a broken foot proved unfounded.
