Sam Denly wants Herne Bay to have a say in the race for Ryman League, Division 1 South honours.
Third-placed Greenwich Borough are at Winch’s Field on Saturday, followed by second-in-the-table Dorking Wanderers the following weekend and while boss Denly knows neither game will be easy, he is looking forward to them.
Striker Charlie MacDonald, who has had spells at Margate and Ebbsfleet in the past, carries pre-season title favourites Borough’s big threat, having scored 10 in the last seven games, including two hat-tricks.
Denly said: “Greenwich’s budget is x times ours. We have to be at our best but will be the underdogs with no pressure on us.”
An injury-hit Bay lost 2-1 at Cray Wanderers on Wednesday night in a re-arranged game that has been postponed twice already.
Mark Lovell equalised from the spot for Bay, but they were beaten by goals from Lee Prescott and Jai McKinlay.
That followed a 4-1 defeat at Carshalton last Saturday which ended Bay’s nine-match unbeaten record, the highlight of a difficult season.
Denly said: “They were a good side and I was quite impressed. We didn’t give a good account of ourselves. We were poor, didn’t really turn up and it was a game too far for us.
“At 2-0 down we got one back with a great header from Mark Lovell but didn’t really kick-on after that and had no real impetus after the goal.
“We looked a bit leggy and didn’t really get going at all.”
