Sam Denly is urging his team to be more clinical in front of goal.

The Herne Bay boss was “frustrated and disappointed” to only come away with a point after a 1-1 Ryman League, Division 1 South draw at Sittingbourne on Tuesday night. He says he will address the problem at training tonight (Thursday) ahead of Saturday’s league game at home to Horsham.

Denly said: “We played well but it’s two points dropped. Only one team should have won that game and it was us.

“A point stopped the rot in the league but we weren’t good enough in front of goal, terrible in fact – and have no excuses.”

“You can’t create that many chances, open them up that often and not score. We have got to be more clinical in the final third.

“We said the same thing a few times last season and I am determined it won’t creep into our game this time. We will be working on it.”

Bourne could have been 3-0 up, before a trademark Stuart King left-foot finish put Bay in front after 27 minutes.

Denly was also unhappy with the Bourne equaliser, when Joe Nwoko put the home side level eight minutes after the break.

He said: “It was terrible by us. We gifted them a goal, we don’t get many like that ourselves and have to work hard for the ones we do score.

“It’s a good thing to play that well but I am sure their manager was a lot happier with the point than me.”

King’s strike was his fifth of the season in the league but Denly wants his team-mates to contribute as well.

The Bay boss said: “Good finish, good goal. He (King) has done well, it’s been a good start for him.

“He is working hard and I am pleased for him. He is getting back to his best – looking good, sharp and composed in front of goal but I am looking for more from those in and around him. Everybody has got to contribute.”

Bay’s 2-0 FA Cup win at Walton & Hersham on Saturday, avenged the home league defeat by the same score the previous week and sets up a first qualifying round trip to Tonbridge Angels on Saturday week.

Denly said of Saturday’s victory: “I expected a response, we couldn’t have played that poor again.”

Meanwhile, defender Connor Sanders got the all-clear last week after recovering from a dislocated shoulder, sustained against Hythe last month.

On Tuesday night (7.45), Bay are at home to South Park in the league.
