I’ve had some good birthdays in my 30 something years, but my latest, spent in the exquisite comfort of the Feversham Arms Hotel is definitely up there with the best.
As a self-proclaimed Yorkshirephile, when the prospect of a stay in the delightful setting of Helmsley came up, I jumped at the chance.
Set in the heart of the Dales market town, The Feversham Arms shouts luxury from the first moment you step through the doors.
Our room, or should I say rooms as we had the pleasure of a Spa suite comprising of lounge, bedroom and huge bathroom with walk-in shower, double sink and bath, had two sets of patio doors leading out to a large balcony overlooking the heated outdoor pool.
And tempted by that view, our first activity was a dip in said water feature. It was bliss, just the right temperature and perfect for a few pre-dinner lengths.
The hotel facilities include the impressive Verbena Spa with Heat Experience consisting of sauna, aromatherapy room, salt vapour room, monsoon shower, ice cave and foot spas.
Back outside, a wooden hot tub provides the perfect location from which to sit and enjoy the view stretching over to Helmsley Castle.
After a slightly whistlestop tour of these bits (hubby isn’t one for relaxation) we headed back to our room to get ready for dinner.
And what a treat eating here is.
According to the hotel’s website, food is as important at the Feversham Arms Hotel as a good night’s sleep, with experienced staff, including head chef Simon Kelly, taking loving pride in the preparation of every meal.
Our feast in the three AA Rosettes restaurant was certainly testament to that statement.
My other half opted for veal, while I tried the fish option – both cooked to perfection.
Staff at the Feversham Arms were all polite, helpful and friendly, but special mention has to go to our waiter, who spent 10 minutes talking us through the impressively stocked cheeseboard. His recommendations were delicious!
A rare night away from our toddler meant a restful night was always on the cards, but our room’s super-kingsize bed stamped the deal.
And, despite going to sleep feeling totally full, by morning we were ready for another gastronomic spread, which breakfast – served in our rooms – provided.
Hemsley sausages, local eggs, smoothies, fruit juice and toast hit the spot.
All were brought to us by a petite waitress who walked the length of the hotel with a heavy tray, but I did feel a tiny bit guilty, when – still smiling – she had to traipse back to kitchen for our pots of tea.
Before checking out we took a quick stroll round Helmsley, a pretty town surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Dales, which is well worth a visit.
To say I didn’t want to leave would be an understatement, next year’s birthday will certainly have something to live up to.
