If you want a break that offers a mix of action and relaxation, Bedruthan Steps is worth a look.
The four-star hotel in North Cornwall, between Padstow and Newquay, offers plenty to see and do.
But you can also slow things down and take advantage of the ample space to relax and do not very much at all.
It’s worth taking some time to admire the breathtaking views the hotel offers, which can be admired while you have breakfast or dinner, or out on the balconies.
The food is delicious, although the portion sizes for the dinner I had could have been bigger, and left me feeling slightly like Oliver Twist, contemplating asking for some more.
When it comes to relaxing at the hotel there are a number of areas that take your fancy.
The large and airy ballroom has sofas, a glowing fire and a mix of colourful art that catches the eye.
The tranquility lounge does exactly what it says on the tin, offering you a silent space to curl up with a book and immerse yourself.
“The Space” is perfect if you want to do something a little more active but not too taxing - you’ll find a poker table, pool table and table football in there.
When it comes to venturing outside, the hotel is a short walk away from a pub and restaurant, although if you want to venture into Newquay and the surrounding towns you’ll need to drive, get a cab or bus.
The hotel is a starting point for many walks along the Cornish Coastal Path and through hidden villages. There are eleven beaches close by, each one offering something different.
Just along the coast is the harbour town of Padstow, home to Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant. So there’s an embarrassment of riches to choose from.
One of the things I knew I needed to try during my trip was surfing.
Bedruthan Steps offers lessons through the hotel, but I took one look at the price and went somewhere else.
£75 for a one-on-one lesson two hour is a bit steep for me.
I went into Newquay and had a lesson for the same length of time but for less than half of that. I was in a group, but after being shown the basics everyone did their own thing anyway.
But that was the only gripe.
The staff are friendly, the room I stayed in was top notch. I only stayed for two days, so it was impossible to cram in everything that Bedruthan Steps has to offer.
But I’d like to come back again and try.
Bed and breakfast ranges from £115 to £405 a night, while a spa break for two will set you back around £300. Call 01637 860 860 or visit bedruthan.com.
