Luxurious spa break at The Club Hotel and Spa, St Helier, Jersey

Jersey is not normally a destination you would chose for a mid-winter getaway, but despite the cold, we thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the luxurious Club Hotel and Spa in St Helier.

For my friend Samantha and I, it was the perfect girls-only trip combined with an early birthday treat for ourselves.

Day one involved dinner in the attached restaurant, Bohemia, which was phenomenal. We couldn’t decide between the various options so went for the six-course surprise tasting menu. And what a surprise it was.

Every dish was new to me, and it was a mental battle to put the first forkful to my mouth as I was a bit dubious about what I was eating – but I was worrying over nothing. Each dish was amazing.

We started with a mushroom soup with a quail egg, then foie gras with an orange jelly topping. There were then langoustines, and our main was a variety of pork.

There was a pre-dessert, then a rhubarb and champagne dessert and then a variety of teas with homemade chocolates (my personal favourite, green chai and white chocolate) and eclairs.

The chefs were also perfectly accommodating of dietary requirements, specially preparing gluten-free dishes for me.

Despite the cold, Jersey was still a beautiful place to explore.

St Helier is small enough to walk around and we spent a couple of days exploring the shops and eateries, sights and beaches.

It has a good shopping centre with pedestrianised streets and a mix of well known High Street stores and small local shops. On warmer days, a stay on Havre des Pas beach, the closest to the centre, is a must. A short bus ride away is one of the most popular places to visit – a tunnel complex built by forced labourers for the occupying German army during the Second World War. It shows what life was like during and immediately after the war.

But back to our relaxing weekend. Day two saw us spend the morning relaxing in the spa, where we had a Pure Detox Envelopment (a salt skin scrub after which you are smothered in mud and wrapped in plastic) and then an aromatic fusion massage.

As this was my first spa treatment I was a bit unsure what to expect, but the staff were lovely and I was, oddly, quite comfortable in just a pair of paper pants in front of a stranger. That afternoon, we returned to Bohemia for afternoon tea; the chefs made me gluten-free sandwiches and scones and a beautiful selection of cakes.

The portions might have looked small, but we were stuffed by the time we got to the last cake.

Throughout our stay the staff were wonderful and helpful, and the lady who did our manicures was full of suggestions on where we could go for dinner and drinks.

If you think all of this sounds out of reach we were pleasantly surprised at the prices – everything was in a range we could afford.

So, if you are after three days of luxurious indulgence at a price that won’t bust the wallet, I would highly recommend The Club Hotel and Spa.

How to get to Jersey:
We flew from Gatwick with Easyjet, which cost £117 for two people. We had an early start as our flight left at 7am, but as we left Chatham at 3.30am there was no traffic and plenty of time to park (£36 for five days at Gatwick Long Stay Parking) and have breakfast before boarding.
If you don’t like flying, you can always get a ferry from Portsmouth.

Where we stayed:
The Club (a 5* hotel) in Green Street costs £99 a night but the price increases towards the summer months. Phone 01534 876500.

Where to eat:
The six-course surprise menu at Bohemia was £49 each, or you can splash out £85 for the Prestige menu.
Afternoon tea ranges between £9 and £30 per person, depending on whether or not you have champagne. Lunch at Bohemia starts at £24 each.
We also found Wildfire, a brilliant bar and grill, on Mulcaster Street, and a lovely cafe called Pasty Presto at Liberty Wharf.

Travel:
Our taxis to and from the airport were £20 each way and you can get an all-day bus ticket for £7, ideal if you want to get out of St Helier and see more of the beautiful island.
