Armed police closed off A259 Dymchurch Road in Hythe

Armed police blocked a road amid reports a person was carrying a weapon near an Aldi.

They were called to the A259 Dymchurch Road in Hythe after the person was spotted in Dalmeny Terrace, close to the supermarket.

Police received the calls at 12.30am and officers were still at the scene at 1.30am.

Motorist Cain Ulyatt from Dover was driving back from Dungeness when he saw the incident and had to find a diversion.

"I was coming back from Dungeness when I saw the flashing lights," he said.

"There must have been between six and ten armed officers."

A police spokesman said officers attended, assisted by a firearms unit and carried out a search of the area.

No weapons were found and no arrests were made.

Enquiries are ongoing.
