A 'distressed' cow caused delays on the M20 this morning.

It is understood the animal wandered onto the motorway, near junction 11 for Hythe, from a nearby field.

Kent Police were called to the scene and put a rolling road block in place on the coastbound carriageway to control traffic.

Officers then attempted to return the cow to its field.

A tweet from the Highways England said: "Kent Police are currently doing a rolling block for a distressed cow on the j11 on slip, they are currently in the process of trying to return it to its field."

But 30 minutes later it was revealed that the cow had been moooved.

A tweet said: "Update - main carriageway released on the M20 Coastbound at Junction 11 Westenhanger.

"The cow has been mooved off into a field by Kent Police.

"Thank you for your patience."

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "Kent Police was called at 7.30am on Monday, May 20 to reports of a cow on the M20 near Junction 11.

"Officers closed the slip road for around half an hour whilst they assisted the animal’s owner in returning it safely to a nearby field."
