Filming for the second series of a popular and Emmy nominated comedy drama has started in Kent.

Movie maker's trucks and trailers have been spotted in Folkestone and Hythe over the last few days, including at the Harbour Arm.

The Kent Film Office has confirmed crews are in the towns filming series two of Back to Life.

Series one of the hit show first aired on BBC Three in 2019. It stars Daisy Haggard as Miri, a 36-year-old woman who has returned to her home town after a lengthy prison sentence.

She moves back in with her mum and dad, played by Geraldine James and Richard Durden, and attempts a fresh start at life.

But as Miri tries to move on from her dark past her neighbours make it a difficult job, having not forgotten what happened all those years ago.

Hythe is used as the location of Miri's home town, and several references are made to it, including a made-up paper called the Hythe Enquirer and concerns from Miri’s dad that Hythe could become the ‘new Margate’.

A CV that Miri puts together also lists her address as Hythe.

But filming took place across the district, including Fisherman’s beach in Hythe, Abbot’s Cliff in Folkestone - its sound mirrors are repeatedly shown - and in Dungeness and Lydd on Sea.

Earlier this year, Back to Life was added to Netflix and earned a whole new legion of fans.

At the time, actress Daisy Haggard, who also created the series, took to social media to express her delight at how it has been received on the streaming site.

She said on Instagram: “So happy to be top of the pops on @netflixuk! Thank you to everyone for spreading the word and for all the gorgeous messages.

“We were not expecting any of this. Big love to all of you and stay safe.”

It is not known how long crews will be in the county filming for series two, but it is expected to return to BBC Three later this year.

It was co-written by Haggard and Perrier Award winner Laura Solon.

Daisy Haggard said: “Laura and I are thrilled to finally start shooting the second series of Back to Life.

"We were blown away by the reception to the first series, so it was both nerve wracking and exciting to write season 2!

"We can’t wait for you all to see the next chapter…”

Daisy also replied to a Tweet asking about filming in Hythe. The Tweet read: "Film crew in Hythe this morning. Does that mean......?"

Daisy replied with a heart Emoji.

New cast members joining for series two include Meera Syal and Adrian Edmondson.
