Traffic was brought to a halt after five peacocks went for a leisurely stroll in the road.

Standing in formation and stretching across the width of the lane, the colourful birds stopped cars in Castle Road, in Saltwood near Hythe.

Their brazen behaviour was captured by Gill Davies-Patrick, who said: "I couldn’t believe it when I saw the peacocks walking in a line across the width of the road, and stopping the traffic.

"I think they may have been on their way back to Saltwood Castle, where they live."

Gill posted the image to the Hythe Residents Group, along with the caption: "Sometimes you get ducks walking in the road, sometimes you get sheep, or maybe even cows, but not in Saltwood.... it’s far too posh for that!"

The picture was well received well, earning more than 400 'reactions', 36 comments and 24 shares.

One commenter said: "The lovely Castle birds! I sometimes see them near Barrack Hill."

Another said: "Love to see the peacocks about the village."

It is not the first time animals have held up traffic in the county.

Last year, a family of ducks were rescued after walking into the road in Canterbury and attempted to reach the roundabout.

And in May a 'distressed' cow caused delays on the M20 after wandering into the carriageway.
